Job Description

Are you motivated by conducting research into the needs and motivations of technologists and leaders inside the world’s most complex businesses? Do you enjoy working together on a team dedicated to designing great product experiences, that knows how to have fun and bond as a community across miles, time zones, and roles? Do you want to create, share, teach, learn, and innovate with us as we explore the transformational effects of powerful software tools?

If this sounds awesome to you, then you’re ready to join us on the Product Design team in the Agile Operations Division (AOD) of Broadcom Software. We are seeking an experienced UX Researcher to conduct strategic user and customer research for our Automic automation and NetOps network monitoring products.

Our teams value respect, trust and transparency, collaboration and teamwork, having fun, and giving back to the community. We believe that diversity of thought and backgrounds makes us stronger, makes our products better, and makes our customers happier.

What you will accomplish

As a UX Researcher, you’ll be responsible for conducting strategic research projects and helping to mature and grow our internal research practice. This is a senior practitioner role with opportunities to grow as a researcher, steer product direction, and collaborate across boundaries. In this role you can expect to:

  • Develop a broad and deep understanding of our primary users, their responsibilities and goals, and the product workflows and capabilities that are most important to them.
  • Guide product teams to identify the right problems to solve and right questions to ask.
  • Internalize the long-term product vision, think holistically about our products and their place in our customers’ businesses, and have an influential voice in product roadmaps.
  • Inform the creation and refinement of products that make our users more productive by defining, planning, leading, and facilitating user research projects of appropriate scope, complexity, and duration.
  • Ensure that research is incorporated into all relevant product activities by building strong relationships with PM, Design, Engineering, and business stakeholders.
  • Synthesize user needs, best practices, business priorities, market directions, engineering constraints, and other contextual information to formulate, articulate, and advocate for research-based product decisions.
  • Create synergy between product-focused and portfolio-wide research projects, delivering insights and uncovering value-generating opportunities for the users, teams, and organizations we serve.
  • Lead inclusive cross-functional discovery, exploration, and design workshops.
  • Expand and scale our research practice by providing tools, contributing to and facilitating internal training, and expanding knowledge and use of user research techniques in our Design and PM teams.
  • Work in cadence with our mature Agile teams, embracing a mindset of rapid learning, experimentation, iteration, and close collaboration.
  • Thrive in an environment that balances autonomy with teamwork, rewards divergent as well as convergent thinking, and values your participation in long-term and short-term product decisions.

Skills & experience

To qualify for this position, you must have:

  • MA, MS, or PhD in UX Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Software Engineering, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Ethnography, Psychology, Sociology, or other discipline focused on human behavioral research or product design.
  • Six (6) years of relevant research experience (3 years with a PhD), preferably in enterprise software, decision support systems, AI/ML, or other complex applications.
  • A portfolio of the research projects you are most proud of, showing what you do and how you work to deliver compelling insights for your stakeholders.

To be successful, you will come to this role with deep, field-proven skills and a collaborative mindset:

  • A track record of well-executed challenging research projects.
  • Clear, concise, and persuasive communications that make research findings relevant and actionable for audiences of designers, PMs, engineers, and executives.
  • Fluency with a broad range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the ability to choose and combine those methods to fit Agile project needs.
  • Experience conducting strategic portfolio-level and cross-product research, from problem identification through solution definition.
  • Experience conducting tactical research to identify and define features, validate product designs, and measure usability and learnability.

To really stand out as the perfect person for this role, you may also have:

  • Ability to specify, gather, and assess telemetry and other user behavior data to uncover opportunities to improve product effectiveness and increase adoption.
  • Experience facilitating design sprints, design thinking sessions, or similar cross-functional workshops.
  • Passion for teaching, coaching, mentoring, and generally sharing what you know.
  • Hands-on experience in information architecture, interaction design, or other product design work.

We understand that employer agreements or the nature of your projects may prevent you from sharing a portfolio of actual research findings, product or client names, etc. If this is the case, you can instead provide a brief written summary of selected projects that includes:

  • your role,
  • the scope of the project,
  • specific methods applied,
  • the kinds of artifacts you produced,
  • how your research contributed to project outcomes, and
  • any other information that will help us assess your skills and experience for this role.
