Job Description

Shift Technology enables the world’s leading insurance organizations to make better decisions with the power of AI. From underwriting risk detection to claims decisioning and financial crime detection, our globally-distributed team solves the most difficult challenges facing insurers today.

Founded in France in 2014, the company now serves over 115 global customers–including 6 of the top 10 U.S. P&C insurers and 4 of the top 10 global P&C insurers–and has processed well over 2.6 billion claims. Our culture is built on innovation, trust, and a drive to transform the insurance industry by imagining and inventing solutions that impact insurers and their customers. We come from more than 40 different countries and cultures to share a common purpose and mission as One Team.

Machine Learning Researcher

THE TEAM

The Research team plays a key role in the company strategy and success, developing technologies that will be used by thousands of insurers and their clients around the world. Shift Technology’s machine learning researchers are the master architects of our current ML technology and the creators of the future ones.

The scientific challenges come from answering complex real-world problems (assess if a claim is suspicious, identify the involved parties in order to deduce liability, generate a detailed understanding of the situation to determine if any coverage exclusion may apply, etc) on varied unstructured data, precisely: many different types of documents, free text, pictures of damages and voice recordings.

YOUR ROLE

  • Follow state-of-the-art ML technology (in particular deep learning), both from industry and academia, to always be aware of the latest developments
  • Test and adapt state-of-the-art technologies or methods to the company’s problems and data
  • Inspired by real-world problems, propose and experiment with innovations on top of state-of-the-art ML methods (new network architecture, etc.)
  • Design and implement algorithms for specific unsolved problems
  • Take full ownership of ML models, including: formulating the prediction problem, collecting training data, training the model, deploying in production, and ongoing evaluation/monitoring of the models.
  • Implement production-ready code and deploy in production
  • Collaborate with other team members to build and develop the internal ML research library.

YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES, IF

  • You hold a PhD in computer science, data science, mathematics, or a related field
  • You have at least 3 years of hands-on experience applying deep learning algorithms on real or realistic data (either in academia or in industry)
  • You master python and its major libraries as a language for machine learning (e.g. scikit-learn) and deep learning applications (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • You are ready to get your hands dirty with data: problem definition, business understanding, dataset collection, preparation, initial labeling (when needed).
  • You are willing to learn about insurance and interested in modeling real world problems
  • You are curious, autonomous and willing to make a lasting contribution and have a real impact on the company's success.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Skills in C# programming language
  • Experience with Transformers
  • Experience on NLP or Documents Processing
  • Experience with insurance
