Job Description

Sponsored Display is looking for an expert in machine learning for online advertising to drive growth in Amazon's fastest-growing ad product. You'll be part of a team of scientists and engineers, building the future of digital display advertising, helping hundreds of thousands of advertisers drive outcomes across the purchase journey with ads on Amazon, 3rd party web and mobile apps, and Amazon Owned and Operated properties.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design and implement machine learning models that predict clicks, conversions, views and other outcomes for scaled self-serve display advertising.
  • Design and implement algorithms that drive bidding, allocation and pricing decisions for hundreds of thousdands of candidate ads with diverse objectives across highly varied supply types.
  • Invent new auction types and controls for advertisers that balance value for shoppers, advertisers and Amazon.
  • Be immersed in Sponsored Display's advertisers and their objectives, and think long-term about how to turn those objectives into products and technical capabilities
  • Understand the latest literature on applied machine learning in advertising, recommender systems and core machine learning to guide strategic investment for the organization

A day in the life

  • Be immersed in Sponsored Display's auction data: candidate ads, objectives, bids and outcomes
  • Design, prototype and validate experiments that test new models, auction mechanisms or parameterizations
  • Turn prototypes into shopper- and advertiser-facing software
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and opportunities in machine learning, economics, auction theory and measurement
  • Be an expert in machine learning for technical and business leaders, able to explain complex ideas in non-technical language

  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
  • Experience of building machine learning models for business application
  • PhD or equivalent Master's Degree plus experience in CS, CE, ML or related field


  • PhD in machine learning, economics, algorithmic game theory, optimization or operations research.
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Expertise in Deep Learning, including multi-task learning, transfer learning, deep RL and/or automated mechanism design
  • Experience in online advertising
  • History of publication in relevant conferences/journals or patents related to online advertising, or experience with technical innovation driving significant customer-facing features
