We encourage working similar hours as the rest of your team to ensure overlap needed for collaboration, though are flexible based on individual needs. Can I work remotely? Of course! While many associates are located near Nielsen offices in New York, Chicago and Tampa, we leverage collaboration tools like Google Meet and Slack that enable us to work remotely. 

What is the role?

We are looking to add a Data Scientist to our team of innovative Panel and Meter researchers. Our areas of expertise include researching hardware, software, quality controls and business rule changes that will improve the accuracy of Nielsen’s TV panel data reporting. You will work on both statistical research and code development by designing small and medium sized research projects based on abstract concepts. You will then execute based on the defined plans and use the results of your research to help implement changes into production code. You will have opportunities to present research to key stakeholders and collect/implement feedback as necessary. Excited? Come join us!

What will I do?

  • Learn and become an expert in TV Audience Measurement, with a focus on business rules used to credit data collected by Nielsen’s TV Panel meters. Design, execute and summarize small and medium size research projects based on abstract questions and concepts.
  • Identify, clean, and summarize data, potentially from disparate and complex data sources, to facilitate high quality analyses. 
  • Develop and share code for analysis and methodology deployments.
  • There may also be some code optimization work.
  • Provide recommendations based on research findings.
  • This includes communicating complex mathematical and computer science concepts in simple terms to non-technical audiences. 
  • Document research plans, results, and conclusions.
  • Share them with auditors as needed.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in various departments (Engineering, Data Science, Technology, etc.). This includes providing status updates, developing timelines, sharing data, executing tests, presenting results, etc.
  • Participate in regular code reviews with team members prior to deployments.
  • Mentor and provide oversight to junior associates while serving as an example by sharing relevant best practices. 

Is this for me?

  • You have a strong background in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Engineering. 
  • You have 3+ years of experience with the following:
  • Project management including working collaboratively across multiple teams
  • Wrangling, interpreting and manipulating complex data using tools such as Python, PySpark, and SQL.
  • Preferred programming experience with Java and Drools as well
  • Use of advanced statistical techniques to analyze and draw insights from data in order to make data-driven methodology recommendations
  • Data Visualization experience, preferably via BI tools such as Tableau
  • Working within the Software Development Life Cycle framework 
  • Working with cloud-based infrastructures and tools such as AWS or GCP, EC2, GitLab and data pipeline automation tools such as Airflow strongly preferred
  • You bring innovative ideas to the table and are comfortable challenging existing methods and processes.
  • You welcome new challenges and are comfortable diving into the unknown with the goal of making sense of what’s noise and what isn’t.
  • You make regular data-driven decisions and are comfortable defending changes to business rules team members and stakeholders.
  • You are willing and motivated to consistently learn about new tools, technologies and business methodologies.
  • You have strong oral and written communication skills and an aptitude for leadership or mentoring.
