Schlumberger Cambridge Research (SCR) is part of Schlumberger's global network of research and engineering centres. SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry. 

Schlumberger Cambridge Research is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. This spectacular building was completed in 1985 and the smaller second phase was opened in 1992. It has recently been classified as a Grade II listed building. Altogether, there are more than 930 m2; of laboratory space and offices for more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a creative self-motivated scientist or engineer to develop new measurement acquisition and data processing methods in order to derive actionable insights from different types of measurement data. Initial projects will involve dynamics data from drilling tools, although other applications could eventually emerge. Technologies being developed target the growing Geothermal well construction market in addition to conventional oil and gas drilling. The job will demand strong maths skills and competency in coding, as well as the ability to work constructively in a multidisciplinary team and a willingness to learn operational procedures and understand the practical needs of end-users.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Use data and signal processing methods together with an understanding of measurement physics and acquired knowledge of drilling dynamics to generate new insights into the drilling process
  • Develop useful performance indicators and metrics based on acquired data
  • Effectively communicate ideas, concepts and results to the team and management
  • Engage and collaborate with Schlumberger technical community
  • Publish scientific papers, write patents applications and attend conferences

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD in physics, applied mathematics, engineering or related field
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to develop novel solutions to research and engineering problems
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation, signal processing and mathematical modelling
