Job Description

The Data Architect will join the AIG Data Office, responsible for designing and implementing the strategic data architecture for AIG’s $30B General Insurance business. The Data Architect will lead the holistic view of how business users access and use data to achieve organizational goals. The target architecture will be heavily focused on the Global Data Warehouse (GDW) and AIG’s new, cloud-based data ecosystem.

The Data Architect will work collaboratively with business and technology partners to facilitate design decisions and ensure the overall data architecture alignment to the Data Strategy. The Data Architect will work with various business partners, data consumers and IT to build and maintain a data and analytics framework that will support the current and future needs of the organization. The ideal candidate can balance tactical and strategic solutions and ensure that roadmaps and plans are in place to achieve the long-term direction.

The responsibilities for this role include:

  • Works closely with data and technology leaders to identify solutions that preserve and enhance the value and utility of company data and information.
  • Partners with IT to develop and maintain the architecture for GI data and analytical programs including the Global Data Warehouse, data engineering/data science solutions, and business intelligence programs.
  • Partners with Business Insights teams to design the consumption layers for dashboards/visualization, reporting, embedded analytics and other information delivery patterns
  • Develops a toolbox of data architecture tools, methods and deliverables to help business leaders identify and make critical data design decisions.
  • Collaborates with Data Governance and Data Management functions to define and align standards to the overall architecture
  • Leads activities around modern data architectures and industry developments. Identify opportunities to enhance AIG’s data strategy.
  • Constructs and maintains deliverables, including process and logical data models, proposals and target operating frameworks that demonstrate how to move the business toward realizing its strategic goals and targeted business outcomes.
  • Advises on options, risks, costs versus benefits, and impact on other business processes and system priorities.
  • Partners with IT Architecture in design of operational/application data assets and ensures alignment with the data strategy and conformance with established AIG data architecture standards.
  • Defines the processes and procedures for ensuring data quality and integrity
  • Works with Data Owners across the organization to identify authoritative sources of data and information and maintain an inventory of key approved systems of record by data domain
  • Partners with business and IT to rationalize legacy data assets and drive decommissioning plans as new assets become available
  • Provides expertise in scoping, planning, developing, and executing business-critical strategic initiatives
  • Continuously evaluates and develops architected data and information flows throughout the enterprise to ensure conformance with Data Policy and Standards, including data security and privacy standards

What we’re looking for:

Key Qualifications

  • Significant experience in data architecture (solution architecture), data management and information classification at the enterprise level, including an understanding of common information architecture frameworks and information models
  • Strong knowledge of data technology including relational, columnar, NoSQL, and cloud based solutions as well as modern data science platforms
  • Experience working in large, complex financial data environments
  • Insurance (ideally property and casualty) industry expertise in the data domain.
  • Business acumen and understanding of Insurance metrics and financials
  • Ability to analyze and translate business requirements into conceptual, and logical data designs.
  • Working knowledge of data science concepts, as well as master data management, data governance, business intelligence, data warehouse design, and implementation techniques.
  • Experience in providing technical expertise and project leadership by conducting industry and market research and making recommendations regarding current and new domain knowledge and related technologies.
  • Ability to understand the long-term (big picture) and short-term perspectives of situations.
  • Effective communication skills and facilitation experience with business and technology stakeholders to understand use cases and business needs.
  • Ability to influence change and drive results. Must be a self-motivated driver to identify issues and resolve them quickly, under the guidance of the Data Governance Council and CDO.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and with changing priorities.

Ideal Experience

  • 12+ years of experience in data architecture, data management and/or business intelligence with progressive leadership roles
  • Experience in Property and Casualty insurance with emphasis in commercial lines
  • Demonstrated experience designing solutions in modern data technology platforms including Cloud (AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Spark) based solutions
  • Experience in developing and operationalizing architectural and data designs, including data, technology and infrastructure
  • Leverages expert problem-solving skills and techniques
  • Has comprehensive knowledge and understanding of principles, procedures, and skills in Data and an advanced understanding of specialized technologies and practices
