Job Description

Ever wonder how you can apply your analytics skills to drive customer experience improvements for a diverse, innovative, and fun company like Amazon? Amazon’s Customer Insights and Research team is looking for a Data Scientist to help do exactly that and much more! If you have experience in surveys, experimental design, statistical analysis, and NLP-based machine learning algorithms and are interested in going deeper into data, this is the right opportunity for you.

Our team is responsible for measuring, monitoring and understanding customer loyalty. We lean heavily on survey research to do this at present, but are also looking to expand/enhance our research products by leveraging new data sources and methods.

You'll have the opportunity to own projects end-to-end, work with partner teams (and data) from across Amazon, and be part of a growing science function within a strong existing team.

We are particularly looking for candidates with experience in some combination of survey research/methodology, econometrics (e.g, causal inference), and NLP. However, we’re open to candidates with more general machine learning skill-sets who are willing to learn.

Finally, we're looking for candidates with some professional data science experience. This is not an entry-level position. Minimum 1-2 years in a data science or data science adjacent role.

Key job responsibilities

As a data scientist, core responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Building ML and/or econometric models that contribute to our understanding of customer loyalty and drive business improvements
  • Developing and testing new methodologies to derive insights from survey data, make survey results more broadly useful for our business partners
  • Developing software tools to support BI Engineers, Product Managers and others in generating insights and supporting customers
  • Working with software engineers to implement models in production systems
  • Exploring new data sources and working with BI/Data Engineers to build scalable data pipelines supporting your modeling efforts
  • Discussing your projects with leadership in partner teams; writing reports and/or white papers to communicate insights

Our approach is based on determining the customer need, along with problem solving, and we work backwards from there. We use technical and non-technical approaches and stay aware of industry and business trends. We are a global team, made up of a diverse set of profiles, skills, and backgrounds - including: Product Managers, Software Developers, Computer Vision experts, Solutions Architects, Data Scientists, Business Intelligence Engineers, Business Analysts, Risk Managers, and more.

  • 2 years working as a Data Scientist

We don’t expect anyone to have all of these qualifications. If you do, you should definitely apply.

  • Experience applying various machine learning techniques, and understanding the key parameters that affect their performance
  • Advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in a quantitative field. Quantitative social science definitely counts.
  • Some experience with software development best-practices, AWS tooling
  • Survey research experience, in particular experience building ML models that leverage survey data
  • Experience with econometric models (particularly causal inference, causal ML)
  • Experience building and applying NLP algorithms (bonus for expertise extracting information from short, messy text)
  • Experience communicating analyses and techniques, both verbally and in writing, to peers and business partners.
  • Ability to write technical (documentation, reports, white papers) and non-technical documents describing your work, deriving insights for our business partners
  • Self-starter with flexibility to work in a fast-changing environment and ambiguous situations with a history of delivering results.
  • Ability to distill problems and constraints from informal business requirements, and comfortable dealing with ambiguity to craft analytical approaches to solving problems
