Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise, conceptual and practical knowledge of theories and principles in the discipline of business intelligence and applies general knowledge of business and industry practices. Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. Provides data driven insights into what and why it happened using descriptive data analysis, root cause analysis, data management tools, visualization and other tools and processes to develop, test, implement and maintain dashboards, scorecards, reports and change recommendations. Identifies patterns and trends and to answer questions that are not obvious and transforms raw data into use and business trend insights. May use data handling tools. Serves as advisor on advanced and broad ranging projects. Interprets business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes, or services. Leads others in solving complex problems using sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions. Leads functional teams or projects. Exercises judgment in evaluation, selection, and adaption of both standard and complex techniques and procedures. Uses in-depth professional knowledge and acumen to develop models and procedures and monitors trends.
Basic Function:
This position manages IT Business Intelligence personnel, provides Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence expertise, and executes the Business Intelligence strategic vision for implementation/services. The Business Intelligence Manager will also offer the enterprise business intelligence, analytics, and technology thought leadership. This role will advise best practices in the data warehouse, integration, modelling, and management methodologies and approaches. A strong understanding of database methodology, data analysis, advanced SQL queries, ETL, and business intelligence is required. Must have management skills to manage a team and drive projects to completion on schedule.
Job Qualifications (Minimum):
- Travel: Ability to travel to client locations up to 25% of the time if required.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in managing and leading a team.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Consulting
- Minimum 4 years of experience with planning, estimating, and coordinating report development activities.
- Minimum 8 years of experience analyzing, designing, and delivering reporting solutions.
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience supporting a Sales effort reporting

Preferred Experience Knowledge, Skills, or Certifications (Minimum):
- Education: Master’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Engineering in a related field
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience working with Cognos Framework Manager, creating, and maintaining packages, designing, and developing meta-models and developing reports. Cognos Business Intelligence reporting experience highly preferred, including expertise in Report Studio
- Good understanding of ETL technologies is preferred.
- Previous experience working with external clients a plus
- Cognos certifications a plus
- Understand logical and physical data modelling concepts (normalization, star schema)
- Ability to transform abstract requirements into well-defined analytics/reports, including drill-down capabilities.
- Broad knowledge of business intelligence tools and systems; relational databases, report writing, data warehouse system process and data modelling.
- Ability to train other fellow developers and extended teams on reporting technology.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
- Provides business intelligence, analytics, and technology thought leadership to the enterprise.
- Manages the team’s workload and delivery of high-quality deliverables on a timely (and cost-effective) basis.
- Coaches/mentors team members to yield maximum value to the business.
- Innovates and drives continuous improvements to the technology infrastructure and operational processes.
- Drives and reviews the design and testing of data models, reporting and analytic tools, and data extracts/transforms.
- Engage with the reporting team and business analyst to understand the objectives of the analytics/reporting solution and translate those requirements into technical requirements and design.
- Understand the reporting metadata model provided by ELM for its products and understand its capabilities and limitations to better design the most appropriate solution for the customer.
- Prepare and review technical design and artifacts.
- Developing and unit testing analytics and reporting deliverables with multiple report pages, prompts, calculations, nested queries/ objects, and variables working with application and data.
- Work with the extended teams when reporting development is split between multiple teams to ensure that all analytics are built to the same reporting standards.
- Collaborate with the QA teams to ensure their understanding of the technical requirements and the ability to test reporting solutions.
- Create and communicate effective packaging strategies for reporting.
- Develop the best practices for deploying reporting packages across Development, QA, and Production environments.
- Facilitate production of ad-hoc and parameter-driven reporting using Cognos BI tools
- Assist in client product implementation and end-user training.
- Work with reporting technical resources to design data models and related views to support client reporting needs.
- Communicate with clients via on-site meetings, conference calls, and written correspondence.
- Comfortably engage and communicate with both business and technology partners.
- Stay abreast with the ELM Passport reporting framework, Cognos, and other Business Intelligence products and tools.
- Develop, maintain, and communicate best practices for report coding disciplines, naming conventions, folder organization, etc.
- Build a library of reporting templates based on different client implementations to speed up report development.
- Design & build complex reports using Query Studio and Report Studio.
- Design & build dashboards and active reports using Cognos workspace advanced.
- Update/Modify Cognos model using Cognos Framework Manager
- Install Cognos on hosted environments as well as behind the firewall.
- Troubleshoot Cognos environmental issues.
- Datawarehouse/DataMart implementation and validation.
- Debug/fix issues in Datawarehouse/DataMart solutions.
- Create custom ETL based on reporting requirements.
- Perform Cognos 10.x to Cognos 11.x upgrade.
- Migrate reports from transactional reports to DWH/DataMart-based reports.
- Conduct user training for Reporting and Datawarehouse projects.
- Recommend and implement best practices for Business Intelligence solutions.
- Conduct solution walkthroughs for complex scenarios.
- Develop prototypes based on learning from various implementations as enhancements to the product.
