About the Role

We are looking for a motivated Head of Mapping and Localization to lead the expansion of our world-class autonomous local goods delivery service to larger geographic areas and larger fleets of robots. In this role, you will lead the teams that build:

• Software that determines the best geographies for service expansion based on routing simulations
• Software and operational processes to generate and maintain the intrinsic and extrinsic calibrations for all autonomy sensors onboard the vehicles
• Software that ingests raw sensor data from data collection missions to build and maintain accurate 3D maps of the delivery environments
• Tools and ML solutions to annotate maps with semantic information necessary for planning and decision making
• Onboard systems for real-time localization for the robotic delivery fleet
• Associated simulation and infrastructure to support safety validation and scalable deployment

As a leader for these teams, you will play a critical role in scaling the autonomous operating area for Nuro’s delivery fleet to accelerate product impact and commercialization goals. This role requires strong people skills, technical depth, as well as a breadth of understanding of joint software and operational challenges.

About the Work

• Set overall technical direction and oversee development for Nuro’s routing, calibration, mapping and localization capabilities as well as internal map software infrastructure
• Develop and operate a highly reliable and scalable routing, calibration, mapping and localization system to support multi-city service expansion for thousands of autonomous delivery robots
• Mentor members of the team, including managers and senior ICs, and support them in their professional development
• Build a diverse, world-class engineering team
• Collaborate with other leaders on setting overall technical and strategic direction of our Autonomy stack. 
• Work closely with Software, Hardware, Operations and Commercialization teams to understand their engineering needs and business objectives

About You

• Technical leadership and people management experience, including managing other managers and a total team size of ideally 25+ people
• Proven expertise in building and scaling SLAM systems in challenging environments
• Solid background of system design and software engineering skills
• You’re start-up minded: You are motivated by the opportunity to have a large impact and have demonstrated an ability to thrive in the ambiguity of a dynamic, start-up environment or you have the DNA to do so
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Bonus Points

• Experience leading engineering teams in autonomous vehicles, AR/VR or related technical fields
• Masters or PhD in robotics, state estimation or computer vision
• Relevant academic publications (ICRA, CVPR, RSS)
• Breadth of knowledge across state estimation, SLAM, machine learning, computer vision, cloud infrastructure 
• Experience in managing or working closely with Software Operations teams
• Start-up experience
