Lead Data Scientist - Product Analytics

The instrumentation & analytics team seeks a top-performing, highly motivated analytics expert to join a center of excellence at PayPal that is at the heart of driving data-driven decision-making. You will have the opportunity to work with multiple business/engineering groups, use your knowledge and experience to elevate the quality of tracking & instrumentation across the company, help data engineers build scalable platforms that produce business metrics, and enable monitoring of those metrics. You will wear several different hats, but one that you will wear consistently is a leader. Strong analytics knowledge, experience with SQL, and a desire to drive positive change are key to success in this role.

Job Description:

The Role:

  • Partner closely with other Product Managers to understand new product offerings being built and work with analysts to recommend the right metrics to measure the performance of those features
  • Provide strategic and tactical guidance on specific data elements that need to be tracked to enable tracking of metrics and assess user behavior
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams, provide ongoing support to help instrument tracking elements
  • Collaborate with data platform teams to build/enhance necessary data platforms to provide metrics & business insights and build alerts to monitor those metrics.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the PayPal tracking infrastructure; Identify and act upon opportunities for simplicity, consistency, and re-usability of tracking code.
  • Train and provide expert consultation to product management, engineering, analytics, and other teams on tracking standards, tools, and processes
  • Document best practices for data tracking and maintain documentation for self-service use.
  • Synthesizing large volumes of data with attention to granular details and influence business partners to drive positive change. Challenge the status quo, and drive data backed decision making.
  • Analyze merchant product performance and health, triage issues, and provide recommendation on the best course solution and optimization.
  • Build automated tableau/Looker dashboards to enable self-serve on insights. Build scalable data cubes to support daily/weekly refreshes of dashboards. Work with Data engineering to put prototypes of databases in production.

Required Skills:

  • Data driven mindset with a degree in any quantitative discipline such as Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics or Mathematics
  • 6-8 years of experience analyzing large, multi-dimensional data sets and synthesizing insights into actionable solutions (preferably in the FinTech domain)
  • Advanced SQL, Excel, and visualization tools such as Tableau; experience with a statistical programming language like R or Python preferred
  • Good understanding of statistics (A/B testing)
  • Prior work experience in a product analytics space would be highly valued
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, to influence cross-functional teams
