UT Southwestern has an opening for the position of Computational Biologist, Autism Genetics

A Computational Biologist I position is available in the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. We are interested in understanding the complex genetics of autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/departments/mcdermott-center/

Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field of biological science.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or a related field of biological science, and two (2) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.

Job Duties:

  1. Perform complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies and results as assigned by the PI.
  2. Develop and/or modify software to support new and ongoing research projects.
  3. Develop and maintain complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
  4. May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, or scientific writing.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform basic and advanced analyses on next generation sequencing and genotyping data.
  • Develop data analysis tools, write algorithms, and deploy computational tools for the exploration of whole exome and genome sequencing data.
  • Develop, run, and interpret quality control procedures for whole exome and whole genome sequencing data and SNP genotyping data.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience with genomic data, tools, and databases (including whole exome and whole genome sequencing data, SNP genotyping data, and transcriptomics);
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and next generation DNA sequencing;
  • Experience designing computational methods and tools, including prior experience with algorithms relevant to computational biology, and skill and experience with statistical analysis;
  • Proficiency with several of the following technologies: Perl, Python, Java, Matlab, R, C, C++, Unix, MySQL.
  • Work requires ability to communicate and work with academic faculty, design creative solutions, both short and long run for software development needs in a bio and medical informatics functional area.
  • Work requires excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Work requires excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Work requires ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Work requires telephone and personal contact with all levels of internal and external personnel and organizations.
  • Work requires minimal physical exertion.
  • Knowledge of Python, R, MATLAB, C++, Java, Apache Spark

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed primarily in general office area.
