As an Applied Science Manager of the Market Insights team, you will enable talented scientists to deliver effective and scientifically-sound solutions to our main business problems.

Bring your strong scientific experience in researching and deploying machine learning solutions to help our millions of customers in their inspiration journey. You will join the team responsible for Zalando's AI-powered Market Insights and ramp up a new team of applied scientists and engineers.

You will make an impact on one of Zalando’s biggest business opportunities: supporting long-term customer relationships through trustworthy, competitive prices. To do this, we use state-of-the-art AI methods on large amounts of multi-modal data (images, text, structured) and human-in-the-loop systems. The Market Insight project uses webcrawl data from all relevant European web shops to find product matches between the Zalando assortment and competitors.

You will have access to highly scalable state-of-the-art infrastructure, huge data sets (both internal and external), experienced teams of scientists and engineers, and Zalando’s existing research, e.g. Fashion DNA embeddings (https://arxiv.org/abs/1609.02489).

Contribute to our scientific efforts with rigorous peer reviews and through publications in international conferences. Mentor junior and mid-level applied scientists. Drive real business impact through scientific rigor and collaboration.

We are looking for a leader with experience in guiding research work, and in delivering impact from ML-based software systems. You will support the team working in a structured and transparent way and achieve results that we can all proudly celebrate. WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED

• Team Management: Recruit, empower and mentor Applied Scientists and Data Engineers, reviewing and guiding their work, creating conditions for high-quality deliveries and career growth.
• Project Management: Support the team in defining and executing roadmaps, in a way that integrates the high level of uncertainty and complexity involved in our projects with the challenge of delivering business impact.
• Raise the Bar: Engage the team into rigor and iterative improvements in Applied Science and Software Engineering.
• Cross functional collaboration: Mentor for close collaboration between data scientists and data engineers in your team. Join forces efficiently with product managers and engineers in the Crawling team and other applied scientists in the department.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• PhD or MSc in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics, with at least 5+ years of industry experience in Machine Learning/Data Science/Deep Learning.
• Experience (2Y+) in people and/or project leadership under uncertainty and ambiguity.
• Proven track record in developing solutions from initial idea to production.
• Excellent communication skills, clarity and structure.
• Analytical thinking and attention to detail: our field is characterized by complexity where details matter, therefore we are in constant need for rigorous and detailed reviews of our initiatives.
• Proven understanding of the theory behind the state-of-the-art methods in your domain, as well as a broad overview of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and statistical methods and best practices in their application.
