Troutman Pepper’s Business Intelligence & Analytics team has an immediate opening for a Data Scientist. The position works with key stakeholders across the organization conducting in-depth analysis, creating analytical tools, and developing data-driven solutions that enhance decision making, drive automation and efficiencies, improve the client experience, enhance attorney work product, and unlock new sources of revenue. The Data Scientist will primarily focus on project and needs assessment, model design and development, and solution deployment. The Business Intelligence & Analytics team functions within the firm’s Innovation Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop enterprise business intelligence and data analytics strategies in collaboration with firm administrative leadership, subject matter experts, lawyers, and clients
  • Collaborate with firm operational departments to interpret data needs and design, develop, and deploy analytical tools to improve and optimize business decisions and performance
  • Counsel with stewards of firm source data systems to ensure data is engineered for flexibility and optimized to support a wide range of needs
  • Locate and unify data from disparate sources (internal, third-party APIs, open-source datasets); manipulate, clean, and prepare data for analysis
  • Conduct advanced quantitative research and analysis of large data sets, applying machine learning and natural language processing techniques, to uncover trends and develop solutions to business challenges
  • Develop high-quality prediction systems and machine learning algorithms and incorporate them into business processes
  • Provide input and feedback on firm data taxonomies, classifications, and schemas
  • Develop processes and procedures for evaluating and prioritizing potential projects
  • Build and maintain a good working knowledge of the firm’s practices and our services for clients
  • Maintain awareness of new tools, processes, and trends in data science, analytics, machine learning that may be adopted or applied in the legal services industry
  • Assist the broader Innovation team in assessing new tools and technologies that rely on data analytics and machine learning
  • Mentor and develop other analytics-focused team members

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Highly proficient with R, Python, and SQL
  • Experience developing and validating advanced statistical models
  • Ability to understand and translate complex business problems into practical solutions while applying advanced quantitative models
  • Solid understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms and familiarity with natural language processing and related libraries
  • High degree of proficiency in data visualization platforms (Power BI and Tableau)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate complex analysis to non-technical audiences

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, economics, or another quantitative field; advanced degree a plus
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience, ideally in a professional services firm
  • Legal services experience a significant plus
