Job Description

The successful candidate will join the CERN OpenStack Team which operates the private cloud infrastructure provided by CERN IT to the experiments, users, and the administration of the organisation.

IP based Load Balancing as a Service (LBaaS) is the most recent offering of the cloud service and is the first feature to move to production from the ongoing work on Software Defined Networking (SDN). It offers a significant improvement over the DNS based load balancing previously available, and usage has grown quickly to a few hundred production instances, including some dependencies for critical services such as Cryo or Vaccuum.

This position will mainly involve:

• Focusing on providing additional SDN functionality, which is currently in prototyping phase;
• Offering private networks for improved isolation between workloads, security groups on all instances for improved access control, and IP mobility across OP services for improved user flexibility.

The project will be in close collaboration with the upstream communities we rely on, and as a shared effort between the cloud infrastructure and networking team.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
• You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience:

• Experience of system administration under Linux;
• Experience developing with Python.

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Experience using of CI/CD tools, test automation and deployment;
• Virtualisation, configuration and container technologies (Openstack, Puppet, Docker, Kubernetes);
• Knowledge of networking technologies.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
