Job summary:

We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven and intelligent Engineering Manager to join the Cazoo team in the Data world in Lisbon, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering. We are a data-driven tech organisation embracing the world of event-driven and serverless solutions, value-adding data products, data lakes, and data warehouses. We are split into a modern squad setup where each squad works on a set of data products.

The ideal candidate will have experience working on large datasets using AWS managed services, be prepared to be hands-on and write Python code in production, as well as people management skills to develop and coach the engineers in the team. Currently you are probably either a Principal Engineer with a few direct reports, or are already an established Engineering Manager.

You will be joining the core vehicle data team within Cazoo, working with huge datasets across the UK & EU (some datasets in the tens of millions, others in the billions) and working to build a powerful, flexible backbone to the rest of our systems. Currently this is built in AppSync on top of DynamoDB, providing a GraphQL layer to our data. The data itself is made up from a multitude of external providers, designed to provide coverage to power car sales across Europe. We work on serving up this data, improving it and making resulting datasets on it. Our data powers everything from the Cazoo Valuation Model to the pages on the website to key decisions in which cars we purchase.

What you’ll be doing:

• Work alongside other engineers in the Core Vehicle Data team
• Build out new features in our GraphQL API
• Integrate new data sources & improve the integrations we currently have
• Line manage a few engineers
• Work closely with the Product Manager on the day-to-day running of the team and team rituals, iteratively improving the team’s Agile working practices

You should apply if:

We are looking for engineering managers who are enthusiastic, have an appetite for learning and self-development and can lead a team that delivers our data strategy.

• You have a wealth of experience within engineering and are comfortable guiding a project and other engineers to delivery, including helping design solutions that deliver the features requested by the product manager.
• You have line management experience and developing a team is a passion of yours
• You come from a software engineering background and have experience in modern software development practices such as version control (e.g. GitHub), CI/CD development and infrastructure as code (preferably Terraform), and embrace a TDD approach where applicable
• You have a background of developing data-driven solutions at a reasonable scale using Python, that result in well-tested and robust (ideally serverless) applications
• You are a cloud practitioner within Amazon Web Services (AWS) and services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, S3 and CloudWatch events / EventBridge hold little secrets from you.
• You are proficient in SQL and understand how a document data store differs from a column data store and when to use which type of data store.
• You have a desire to do things the right way, yet remain flexible with a degree of pragmatism when needed.
• You possess a positive, can-do attitude and do not shy away from a challenge.
