Job Description

To drive innovations for the Philips patient monitoring portfolio as part of a cross-functional research team. The work is application-oriented aiming at competitive measurement solutions which are driven by technical progress, new and improved clinical workflows, changing customer/patient needs and new business models.

Your challenge will be to develop algorithms for health and wellbeing assessment aimed at in-hospital and remote patient monitoring applications. Core of this position is the task to translate measurements of biomedical signals captured by wearable sensors into clinically valid physiological metrics. The goal will be to create innovation that would allow clinical customers to care for patients remotely and improve workflows by enabling transitional care programs.

You are responsible for

  • Mastering both classical signal processing and machine learning techniques as well as novel data science and AI tools to produce mature algorithms for predicting vital signs and digital health biomarkers from wearable sensors.
  • Tailoring algorithms to specific clinical applications and workflows to robustly extract physiological parameters in real life conditions.
  • Being able to create and maintain technical assets to rapidly and continuously validate and improve algorithms.
  • Understanding the physiological processes related to biomedical signals (ECG, PPG, biomechanics) and how these can be utilized to create innovative digital health metrics.
  • Utilizing information on the system architecture (cloud and embedded) and clinical requirements to build solutions for patient monitoring applications within the Philips ecosystem of products.
  • Engaging with business partners, system architects, quality engineers and clinical scientists to ensure swift deployment and regulatory approval of algorithms in medical products.
  • Producing documentation to inform about the performance and capabilities of the developed algorithms to clinical and non-clinical customers.
  • Scouting the latest trends in the wearable device industry and the breakthrough scientific innovation from academia in the area of digital health.

You are a part of

The Patient Care & Monitoring department. Comprises 60 highly skilled professionals. The focus of the department is to provide clinically relevant and business-compatible solutions for high- and low-acuity care settings, comprising vital signs monitoring, data-driven connected systems, all the way up to enabling services.

At the heart of our capabilities lies an interdisciplinary mix of human physiology, electronic/systems design, data scientists and clinical workflow, which are being leveraged to develop integrated propositions from idea to concept and up to transfer in one of our business units. We work, already at a very early stage, with our key businesses and leverage our strong academic and clinical network. The department is involved in early technology scouting up to first-of-a-kind product development for acute and transitional care settings.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • PhD or Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, signal processing, computer science or comparable.
  • Experience with application-oriented design of algorithms for modeling physiological processes and measuring vital signs, activity, and digital health biomarkers.
  • Experience with design of AI/ML algorithms for time series analysis, regression and classification
  • Experience with optimization of signal processing algorithms for real-time and cloud SW implementation is a plus
  • Understanding of the latest developments in wearable sensing technology including ECG, PPG, and biomechanics sensing technology.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Matlab, C/C++
  • Interested to work and develop in the area of medical devices development and remote patient monitoring as a highly regulated field
  • Good communication, presentations skills and ability to convince people
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal

In return, we offer you

A path towards your most rewarding career. Succeeding in this role in a complex environment will open many doors for your long term career, in other areas in Philips or otherwise. We also believe that we are at our best as a company when you are at yours as a person. Thus, we offer competitive health benefits, a flexible work schedule and access to local well-being focused activities. We will not only contribute, but also drive key assignments and strategic initiatives.
