Job Description

Intelligent Systems Research Lab (ISR) focuses on augmenting human capabilities and experiences by understanding practices in everyday life and developing AI algorithms, systems and solutions to enable disruptive applications. We are a multi-disciplinary lab that brings together skills in social science, design, AI and computational imaging. We tackle pain points in current AI systems including accuracy, computational efficiency, generalizability to new domains, training data size and explainability. We build technologies to enable true collaboration between humans and AI in smart spaces and robotics and develop workloads like computational imaging, video understanding, multi-modal conversational agents, Deep RL and graph neural networks that can establish performance advantages for Intel platforms.

Intel Labs is an industry-leading research organization, responsible for driving Intel's technology pipeline, product innovations, and creating new opportunities. The mission of Intel Labs is to deliver breakthrough technologies to fuel Intel's growth. This includes identifying and exploring compelling new technologies and high-risk opportunities ahead of business unit investment and demonstrating first-to-market technologies and innovative new usages for computing technology. Intel Labs engages the leading thinkers in academia and industry in addition to partnering closely with Intel business units.

ISR is looking for a full time social scientific researcher with experience in any aspect of responsible AI. In this position you will have the opportunity to conduct independent research that informs and shapes AI technologies and improves their social impacts. This research will inform our corporate wide responsible AI effort, enable internal and external teams to develop AI responsibility and impact our tools and solutions. You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team across social science, HCI and AI.

Responsibilities include:

  • Define and conduct research on responsible AI and/or human-centered AI, including labor, bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, governance, sustainability, accessibility, or any emerging responsible AI topic.
  • Collaborate with the Responsible AI Advisory Council to take some of this research into practice and collaborate with other product groups across Intel to enable those teams to anticipate social impacts.
  • Collaborate with other researchers in ISR and IL to advance the research and conduct real world experiments applying this research.
  • Participate in cutting-edge research with others in the lab, potentially including human/AI collaboration in manufacturing and education.
  • Identify new and upcoming research areas by interacting with potential external and internal collaborators.
  • Publish and present novel research findings in top academic venues; engage with the academic community.

The successful candidate should exhibit the following behavioral traits:

  • Willing to work well across many disciplines and epistemological differences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

This is an entry level position and compensation will be given accordingly.

Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience would be obtained through a combination of prior education level classes, and current level school classes, projects, research, and relevant previous job and/or internship experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Communication, Data Studies, Political Science, Policy Studies, Law, Information Science, Digital Humanities, Human-Computer Interaction or any related field.
  • 1+ year of research experience related to social aspects of any responsible AI topic, including but not limited to labor, bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, governance, sustainability, and accessibility in any application area in any geographical region

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track record of applying research results to real-world settings and/or working directly with engineers on a technical problem
  • Previous experience working in industry or with industry-based collaborators
  • 3+ publications in high quality journals or conferences relevant to your discipline
