About the Role

Capella is looking for a Data Science Intern to join the Analytics team. We’re looking for someone to help us push the bounds of what we can automatically extract and detect in our Very High Resolution radar imagery 

In this role you will be contributing to research on image segmentation and/or object detection projects. Your key responsibilities will include:

• Work as part of a collaborative team to create and augment ML datasets. Projects may include:
  • Curating semantic segmentation and object detection data
  • Extrapolating relevant metadata from existing datasets
  • Cleaning existing datasets
  • Improving current pre-processing/data preparation workflows
• Support one or more projects, such as:
  • Variety of semantic segmentation projects (e.g. mapping of oil spills, flood water extent, building and road networks) 
  • Development of object detection annotation data sets
• Participate in day-to-day operations of the Data Science team at Capella (e.g., project planning, stand ups, etc.) 
• Present your work-in-progress and final results to the team 
• Contribute to relevant internal data science code bases

This position is a paid, full time, three-month internship, with the option to extend for longer.

Requirements

• Experience using Python for data analysis
• Experience with GIS and geospatial data, remote sensing or imagery data

• Interest in computer vision applications in satellite image processing 
• Working on or completed an academic degree with a quantitative focus
• Excellent and proactive communication.
• Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.

Preferred

• Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning technologies
• Fundamental understanding of Python and standard computer vision frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, Tensorflow) 
• Familiarity with image processing and associated tools
• Experience working with SAR data
