The Notion Data Scientist will be responsible for collecting data and developing models to share analytics insights internally with Notion’s business and marketing teams and externally with Notion’s business partners. Analyze sensor patterns and customer behavior to better understand how Notion’s home awareness sensors provide value to homeowners, reduce risks, and lower insurance claims. Develop new models and metrics, engineer new data pipelines, and share your conclusions with internal and external stakeholders. In addition to the above, you will be a core member of the data science team, designing and developing IoT sensor models for Notion’s core products. That work will include classical- and deep machine learning algorithms, signal processing, state machines, statistics, and extensive data visualization. You should expect to work with moderate guidance in your own area of knowledge; be able to effectively research and implement new techniques; write documented, tested, and maintainable code; collaborate with your team to plan a work roadmap; keep your work organized and documented; and communicate your progress on assigned tasks. To thrive in this role, you should be energized by building things and solving technical puzzles.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes statistical and mathematical solutions to business problems. Frames problem, develops roadmap and communicates intended approach to develop solution. Collaborates seamlessly with teammates in Partnership, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to define objectives for those projects.
  • Responsible for the implementation, refinement and validation of statistical models and machine learning algorithms for products and applications. 
  • Contributes to design and development of data pipelines consisting of data ingest, data validation, data cleaning and data monitoring. This includes work with relational databases, time-series databases, and data warehouse services.
  • Is comfortable navigating and writing queries against large datasets. Able to analyze and revise queries to optimize performance. 
  • Uses analytical rigor and statistical methods to analyze large amounts of data, extracting actionable insights using advanced statistical techniques such as data analysis, data mining, optimization tools, and machine learning techniques and statistics.
  • Uses data visualization tools effectively to aid understanding and to communicate findings. This work will include both web-based business intelligence platforms and Python code (matplotlib, Pandas, plotly).
  • Writes tested and maintainable (Python) code to run reliably, efficiently, and at scale in a production environment.
  • Designs proof of concept solutions and contributes to studies to support future product or application development.
  • Maintains code, tools, and documentation; finds value in sharing findings and techniques with teammates; takes pride in their work.
  • Takes initiative to learn new tools and technologies and to research best practices. Uses such learnings to advance the team’s knowledge, tooling, and workflows.
  • Regularly exercises independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
