Job Description

GRM Actuarial – Global Non-Price Predictive Modeling (NPPM) is searching for a highly motivated Senior Director, Data Science to lead the US NPPM team. This role involves developing and implementing a strategic vision for how GRM Actuarial can effectively use predictive models and analytical insights to answer the wide variety of questions impacting the very complex insurance industry. The role requires a broad knowledge of predictive modeling and actuarial techniques, and advanced application of those techniques to solve complex business problems. The successful candidate will be intellectually flexible, have a proven track record of utilizing strategic thinking to meet evolving stakeholder needs, and possess strong leadership and communication skills necessary to convey complicated information and analytical recommendations effectively to a wide variety of audiences. This is a highly visible position that will connect often with senior management and other groups across Liberty Mutual and will report directly to the Head of Global Non-Price Predictive Modeling.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop talent: Build and elevate data science and business capabilities within the team; coach and develop a team of up to fourteen data scientists.
  • Foster collaboration: Work with business partners to develop appropriate statistical approaches and tools that will drive strategic decision making related to reserving, trends and other challenging problems central to our business.

  • Influence priorities: Proactively identify and support the development of highly complex and creative modeling solutions; allocate resources to GRM Actuarial projects to provide the most value to the organization.
  • Exert influence & communicate effectively: Communicate results, recommendations, and insights in written and oral formats to increase understanding and influence decision making.
  • Influence Data Science Best Practices: Regularly engage with LM data science community and lead cross-functional working groups.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or any other quantitative field ORcomparable actuarial education/designation with 8 to 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills with solid understanding of casualty actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions. 
  • Proven ability to lead and drive projects through others, develop talent, and engage employees, typically demonstrated through prior experience effectively managing talent.
  • Knowledge of insurance principles, underwriting and the various functions of an insurance organization, including Finance, Underwriting, Sales and Claims desirable.
  • Exceptional leadership, problem solving, decision-making, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish and build effective relationships.
  • Ability to give effective presentations to and influence senior leaders and other groups.
