The Mobility Accelerator is part of Hitachi’s Social Innovation Business and is set-up to develop new socially beneficial technologies in the area of future mobility.

This role is for a Senior Data Scientist to join the ‘Intelligent Infrastructure’ team inside of the Mobility Accelerator. This team is developing a portfolio of products which leverage Hitachi’s existing rail capabilities, turning passenger trains into mobile monitoring systems capable of predicting and diagnosing faults in the railway. In doing so, we aim to increase the safety for those working on the railway and reduce unscheduled delays. Starting in the UK, it is envisaged that successful trials will result in a global roll-out.

Of particular focus is the use of train-mounted video cameras for a range of use cases including to assess the health of the railway tracks, overhead electrification equipment, and vegetation incursion.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our video analytics delivery team with a strong background in statistics, image/video analysis, time series and signal processing.

Responsibilities:

Research and innovative problem-solving

  • Research and develop analytics techniques using video to improve maintenance and safety outcomes on the railway
  • Experiment to validate technical approaches and obtain insights to prove/disprove ideas, thinking and/or hypotheses
  • Evaluate and assess trade-offs of different analytics techniques to find best/good enough approach for different use cases

Analytics development

  • Computer vision analysis, including deep learning and conventional techniques for video and images
  • Signal processing and time series modeling
  • Statistical analysis, uncertainty estimation and error impact assessments
  • Outlier removal and anomaly detection

Software engineering

  • Experiment and early-stage development in Notebooks
  • Package functionality as algorithm libraries in IDEs
  • Package proper code in IDEs
  • Version control models, experiments, and metadata
  • Implement model performance and monitoring metrics
  • Light-weight/early-stage model deployment

Essential skills and experiences for this role:

  • Track record of project experience in applying data science and statistical techniques to solve business/research problems
  • Strong understanding of and practical experience in statistics, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, signal processing, and time series
  • Proficient at Python software engineering
  • Proficient at relevant data science libraries (e.g. Sklearn, Pandas, Scipy, Statsmodels, OpenCV)
  • Proficient at relevant deep learning libraries (e.g. PyTorch, Keras, TensorFlow)
  • Competent in SQL
  • Competent in any cloud technology
  • Competent in agile development
  • Proficient in English

Nice to have skills and experiences for this role:

  • Understanding in physics
  • Experience with PySpark, Structured Streaming, Delta Tables
  • Experience with Azure and DataBricks
