As an Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist with expertise in wide variety of Statistics methods, you support our strategic efforts and develop innovative solutions to challenging business problems by utilizing scientific methods and problem solving. You perform research across multiple disciplines while developing and implementing technical solutions through hands-on experimentation and problem-solving. You can also solve complex research problems and takes a new perspective on existing solutions.

Statistics is widely used throughout Dow to make the best use of data, not only to enhance the decision-making process, but also to optimize current or new products, and troubleshoot current processes. This role requires broad problem-solving capabilities through collaboration with various disciplines in R&D, manufacturing, and commercial businesses located globally. The Ideal candidate should have a passion for applying inferential statistical methods to aid researchers in their scientific discoveries. Candidates should also enjoy solving problems by researching, developing, and applying different statistical techniques including, but not limited to: computational statistics, Bayesian methods, experimental design, functional data, machine/deep learning, multivariate data analysis, nonparametric data analysis and time series. Candidates will need to manage multiple projects simultaneously across many scientific fields (chemistry, physics, materials/polymer science, engineering, etc.) and can explain/teach highly technical information in an understandable manner to a wide array of audiences and stakeholders.

Key Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting, promoting, and enhancing the application of sound experimental design strategies and statistical analysis methods within R&D and across the company.
  • Identifying value-creation opportunities for the application of statistics.
  • Researching, identifying, developing, and implementing cutting-edge statistical analysis techniques and introducing these into the company.
  • Keep current with developments in relevant area of technology and identify and implement applications which will benefit Dow. Have an in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature across adjacent areas of technology.
  • Develop robust communication strategies and implements a range of effective communication methods that inform and influence; effectively utilizes organizational networking to influence decision making.
  • Document methodology, knowledge and technology developed in internal reports and presentations. When appropriate, publish work externally in alignment with business and technical strategies. Draft and submit patent disclosures and patent applications as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of business ambitions, goals, and strategies and can articulate team role.
  • Foster a safe work environment, leading by example and taking initiative to identify and address potential risks. Understands and follows appropriate EH&S standards, policies, and procedures applicable to their job.
  • Developing and delivering training on statistical concepts related to data analysis, data visualization, measurement system assessment, experimental design, and related topics.

Required qualifications

  • Masters or PhD degree in Statistics
  • A Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in Chemical Industry
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – position requires strong interaction in a multi-functional team environment.
  • Strong Problem-solving skills, systems thinking and business acumen. Ability to quickly understand the domain knowledge and develop solutions.
  • Strong background in one or more of following: computational statistics, Bayesian methods, experimental design, multivariate data analysis, nonparametric data analysis and time series analysis.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Proven track record of creating value by developing innovative solutions to complex technical issues by using Statistics methods.
  • Documented track record of technical documentation and/or external publications
  • Strong knowledge of one or more statistical packages: R, JMP, Minitab
