DNV – Energy Systems’ Analytics and Digitalization (A&D) group is seeking a Data Science Intern to join our team this summer. This role will be part of a team responsible for using statistical programs, developing internal analytical solutions, and using other tools to conduct intensive analysis of project data and client challenges, complemented by objective research to support project needs. This position is based out of our Oakland, CA or New York, NY offices, although it is possible that it can be filled out of any DNV US-based office.

The internship will allow the Intern to gain significant knowledge about current and future trends in transportation electrification, GHG impacts, distributed energy resources, etc., and the historical and current technological issues in the clean energy industry through on-the-job work/training and scheduled weekly learning opportunities provided by DNV experts.

What You’ll Do

  • Data science intern position in a growing data science team of an engineering and market research consulting firm.
  • Own a specific assignment to be completed by the end of the internship (from conception and ideation through delivery)
  • Support client work delivery including:
    • Assist with data pipeline by collecting, cleaning, and standardizing, and analyze data from various internal and external sources (e.g., APIs, FTP servers)
    • Assist with Agile scrum management
  • Improve and recommend data collection, cleaning, and quality control specifications and data sampling techniques. Apply missing data treatments as needed
  • Hands-on tool building and analytics. Develop or improve routines that can improve business or analytic processes.
  • Maintain existing project databases and data pipelines; contribute to the firm’s code base.
  • Utilize parallelized programming (Databricks, Spark, Hadoop, etc.) for batch processing across large datasets
  • Brainstorm, design, and code original analyses that quantify the achieved impacts, forecast potential impacts, and estimate cost-effectiveness of utility-scale energy efficiency, demand response, and distributed energy resources programs
  • Forecast site-level consumption using a variety of modeling techniques such as linear regressions, random forest algorithms, artificial neural networks, etc
  • Use strong communication skills to translate data analysis findings into coherent written and verbal conclusions for client-facing reports and professional papers
  • Develop and maintain products that deliver data visualizations/reports to enable users to grasp concepts, identify patterns, and make better business decisions
  • Interact with other team members and clients in a manner that is professional and promotes collaboration

Position Qualifications

What is Required

  • Undergraduate or graduate level student in an analytical discipline, such as engineering, mathematics, statistics, economics, or computer programming
  • Strong knowledge in at least one of the following areas: database development (PostgreSQL or SQL Server), statistical modeling (Python, R, or SAS), and data visualization (PowerBI or Plotly Dash)
  • Relevant courses/experience with Python programming and/or database development and management.
  • Experience with pandas preferred; experience with common packages like scikit-learn or matplotlib libraries is highly preferred
  • Prior exposure to utilities or broader energy sector and experience in distributed energy resources (DERs), energy efficiency (EE), and electric vehicles (EVs) is highly preferred, including work related to data structures pertaining to smart meters and billing data
  • Most importantly, this individual should display a positive, team-oriented attitude to match our friendly work environment
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
