Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most optimally. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be on-site 1-4 x per year.

ROLE:

The Vehicle Safety Advanced Analytics Data Scientist will be responsible for sophisticated analytics methodologies and approaches. Customers for this Data Scientist will include the Vehicle Safety Emerging Issue Monitoring and Product Investigation Analytics Support teams as well as other areas of Safety Analytics. Focus of role is on new text classification methods and structured data analysis, including machine learning and deep learning. Data sources include customer complaints, warranty, engineering, crash, telematics, survey, and research data.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement best-in-class advanced analytic methods
  • Develop statistical models and approaches to solving data surveillance and analysis issues, including machine learning and deep learning methods
  • Present analysis to internal audiences by synthesizing complex data and concepts into easy-to-comprehend, comprehensive, and cohesive presentations
  • Work with emerging issues data scientists and product investigation support analysts to improve model capabilities and performance
  • Conduct hands-on statistical analysis (e.g., machine learning and deep learning) on large data sets as needed
  • Participate in technical conferences, meetings, panels and other vehicle safety forums
  • Collaborate with Safety, Engineering, CDAO, Quality and IT customers on projects

Required Skills

  • 2+ years of post graduation work experience required
  • Knowledge of data mining, machine learning, deep learning, and NLP algorithms.
  • Highly proficient in descriptive/predictive modeling and data wrangling tools such as Python, R, SQL and etc.
  • Proficiency with analytics / NLP frameworks such as scikit-learn, tensorflow, keras, torch, nltk, genism, spacy, etc.
  • Proficient in feature engineering for structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience with distributed computing tools such as spark or dask
  • Knowledge of big data tools and Hadoop ecosystem
  • Knowledge of statistical methods such as sampling techniques, multivariate analysis, regression analysis, survival/reliability analysis, design of experiments, and analysis of variance.
  • Deep understanding of text representation techniques (such as n-grams, bag of words, word embeddings, etc.), statistics and classification algorithms
  • Proven experience developing, integrating, and continuously supervising large coordinated datasets and predictive models
  • Willingness to learn new skills and methods as needed – continuous learning mentality
  • Experience with data preparation, rationalization, and processing

Strong quantitative skills

  • Experience with visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, matplotlib, ggplot, plotly, or etc.
  • Ability to optimally communicate results and methodologies
  • Strong drive for results and intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in Applied Statistics/Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or related quantitative field.
  • Professional certification in data science related systems and tools a plus

Preferred skills:

  • Master’s degree in Applied Statistics/Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or related quantitative field.
  • Knowledge of GM IT systems and processes, especially in the areas of Engineering, Quality/Warranty, Customer Care and Aftersales, or OnStar.
  • Experience with collaborative developments and version control systems, such as git.
  • Familiarity with deployment tools such as: REST API, batch processing, docker containers, etc. is a plus.
  • Two or more years’ experience in vehicle engineering or service.
  • Solid understanding of vehicle systems and CAN bus and telematics data is a plus.
  • Multilingual proficiency is a plus.
