Job Description

As a Research Engineer - Manufacturing & Material Modeling, you will be directly responsible for the development of advanced manufacturing and inspection technologies for GE product and service applications. In this role, you will implement the latest computer-aided methods to develop, plan, analyze and optimize manufacturing & inspection of complex 3-D geometries, design for additive manufacturing, manufacturing producibility, and performance characterization for as-manufactured and in-service GE products.

Essential Responsibilities

You will:

  • Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team to invent or develop mathematical foundations, algorithmic infrastructures in Computational Geometry, Computational Metrology, Computer-Aided Design, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) domain.
  • Write prototype software, as needed, and integrate with existing internal or commercial software for downstream design and manufacturing applications.
  • Design and conduct experiments to calibrate and validate these computational models.
  • Work across organizations, including interfacing with GE businesses, government agencies and universities, to define project objectives and technical approach, and meet project deliverables.
  • Communicate progress internally and externally through oral presentations, internal reports, and as appropriate through external communications including conference presentations and publications, to engineering and leadership teams at GE Research and GE businesses, government agencies and professional societies.
  • Foster an inclusive multidisciplinary team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Expertise in CAD/CAM for 3-D manufacturing (e.g., additive manufacturing, conventional material removal or deformation, or robotic machining)
  • Inspection planning & analysis for complex 3-D geometry (e.g., optical metrology, CMM, NDT)
  • Programming skills and experience creating algorithms & software to solve technical problems in advanced manufacturing, and experience in computer programming (e.g., Python/C++/C#/C)
  • Knowledge of geometric/solid modeling, and familiarity with one or more commercial CAD/CAM systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in large multidisciplinary teams.

Desired Characteristics

  • Publication and innovation record in Computational Geometry and CAD/CAM domain, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents.
  • Experience with commercial CAD/CAM and 3D metrology tools (e.g., NX, PolyWorks, Mastercam).
  • Experience with agile software development practices.
  • Experience with automated software testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative software development (git, svn, etc).
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, data analytics, and/or machine learning methods.
  • Active security clearance and/or the ability to obtain a US security clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship
