Best Buy’s Product Decision Science team has two new Senior Decision Scientist opportunities. These roles will focus on Inventory and Category.

The Product Decision Science team is responsible for creating and sharing out product insights using internal Best Buy data. This team strives to be the subject matter experts on product data and to deliver state of the art analyses to our business partners which includes category merchants, finance partners, and other strategic business teams.

Category Assortment Senior Decision Scientist: Your focus will be to ensure Best Buy’s has the optimal products assorted in existing and new growth product categories. You will provide guidance and intelligence on assortment decisions. This will include evaluating transactional and market data to inform Category teams of optimal assortment in-store and online. Additionally, you will perform many ad-hoc category analyses that will inform each category’s strategy.
Inventory Optimization Senior Decision Scientist: Your role will focus on ensuring that Best Buy will have the correct products in the right place/location/time, considering constraints on fulfillment channels and Best Buy’s distribution strategy. This role will make recommendations for optimal location inventory based on distribution constraints. You will be responsible for making recommendations and facilitating updates of rules and logic for inventory allocation in AIP.

The individuals in these roles will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to effectively communicate and present findings to clients. In addition, we seek individuals who are passionate about learning our business/domain, collaborating with others, working with industry leading analytical tools, and exploring internal (ex. transactional or inventory) and external (ex. competitive pricing or assortment) data sources. The results-oriented individual will maintain a service and growth mindset and have a passion for examining transactional trends and outcomes and conveying these findings to a non-technical audience.

Key responsibilities for these roles:

  • Manage analytics projects that will require engagement and influence of cross-functional teams.
  • Drive business results through performing analytics and leading clients to a holistic understanding of how their business quantitatively operates.
  • Lead scoping sessions with business clients.
  • Frame and structure engagement goals and the analysis approach.
  • Use project management skills to delegate tasks to cross functional team members.
  • Perform complex analytics using scientific methods that rely upon mathematics, statistics, and hypothesis testing.
  • Write code using one or more of the following languages: SAS, SQL, Python, and/or R as applicable to the engagement and/or build complex Tableau and/or Power BI workspaces suited for the analytical exploration of datasets or regular reporting via dashboards.
  • Create presentation-ready material utilizing tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and Microsoft Office.
  • Create and package deliverables for clients in a non-technical, easy to understand manner.
  • Lead client delivery meetings to show how analytics drive business results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years' experience in retail, analytics, or related business domains
  • 4 or more years' experience applying data analytical techniques to solve business or scientific questions
  • 3 or more years' experience with analytical tools (SQL, Python, R, or related)
  • 1 or more years' experience of formal or informal leadership experience
  • 1 or more years' experience managing projects
  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or related field with quantitative rigor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 or more years' experience presenting to all levels of an organization
  • 1 or more years' experience in supply chain or inventory management or product analytics (assortment, pricing, or strategy)
  • 1 or more years' experience with cloud data analytics/engineering
  • Master’s Degree in Statistics, Economics, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Sciences, or similar field with quantitative rigor
