Job Description

Designs and implements computer-based solutions for Valero's HR enterprise data management technologies as part of the HR Data Science team. Works in close collaboration with team members, end users, and other departments to meet the company's goals. The primary focus will be project based assignments, but will also include supporting existing reporting, analytics and data management solutions.

  • Works on the design and implementation of projects that involve business intelligence and data architecture solutions.
  • Supports business intelligence tools, systems and business users, with projects and/or enhancements to existing applications.
  • Automates and reshapes data using Valero full stack SQL server, Python, SAP and Spinifex, to develop high performing data pipelines.
  • Understands SQL Server Management Studio database hierarchies and schemas.
  • Troubleshoots and develops new or existing SQL server stored procedures and functions in multi-schema databases.
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Visier modules by partnering with our internal IS team and external Visier implementation team.
  • Develops, complex programs for data normalization concepts currently being used in all data models, such as organizational hierarchy and accounting cost center hierarchy.
  • Develops Python automations, data wrangling, and scripting in combinations with SAP VB Scripting.
  • Writes and automates Python programs to extract data from Internal or External APIs.
  • Develops Interface files for other downstream systems.
  • Ensure efficient and effective data integrity management practices by developing and executing automated programs to audit SAP Master Data and against other data sources.
  • Consults with customers and generates complex data structures to eliminate manual work for time consuming tasks that would benefit from automation.
  • Creates data comparison delta files to capture patterns of modified Master Data.
  • Develops DAX functions in Power BI / Power Queries and creates dashboards using Power BI or SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Writes advanced queries in Business Objects using multi-dimensional BW universes with other data sources.
  • Works closely with the analytics group and supplies automated customized reports and datasets.
  • Works closely with the IS team to help develop out of scope customized SAP function modules.
  • Conducts system audits and suggests solutions to improve existing systems.
  • Works on moderately complex tasks for the deployment of new solutions and enhancements/fixes to existing solutions. These include, but is not limited to: troubleshooting, problem-solving, issue resolution, user interaction, training, defining systems scope, gathering requirements, documenting design & technical specifications, research and fact-finding, configuration, testing, reporting, cutover testing, and business user coordination.
  • Maintains effective work relationships within departmental and functional lines at various job levels with business users, IS departments, user groups, and Valero business partners.
  • Learns or demonstrates a broad, in-depth understanding of more than one business intelligence product/tool and associated integration.
  • Performs analysis on and recommends complex quality solutions.

This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Engineering or related field required.
  • 3 years of data science experience to include advanced query design, data manipulation, and automation required.
  • Experience utilizing SAP BW, PowerBI, Business Objects, and/or other ERP systems required.
  • Experience utilizing MS-SQL / MS-Visual Studio, R, and/or Python required.
  • Experience interacting with functional team members and business process owners to gain an understanding of business processes, gather reporting requirements, prioritize work, and coordinate testing for projects required.
  • Experience with SAP HR ERP system preferred.
  • Experience with Spinifex IT solutions strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Visier solutions strongly preferred.

Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
