DESCRIPTION

The Natural Gas Market Analyst provides commodity market fundamentals, short/medium term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for the US natural gas supply and trading functions. In addition, this position will support ad hoc requests from Commercial Senior Management, Commercial groups, Chief Economist, Investor Relations, and Downstream.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including key supply/demand regions, logistics assets, storage facilities, and financial instruments used to hedge positions in these markets. An understanding of key trading strategies is crucial for success.
  • Communicating market fundamentals and trading strategies to Commercial leadership and assisting in the development of a market entry plan for a natural gas trading desk befitting Commercial’s overall trading strategy.
  • Understanding key trading positions at all times and supporting the analytical team’s work to ensure all aspects of a trading position are understood.
  • Development and maintenance of supply and demand models, in close collaboration with trading, to build consensus on market trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, macro variables and import/export data.
  • Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
  • Use fundamental and technical data to develop forward global market view predictive models.
  • Partner externally with consultants and brokers for their views on commodity markets and factor those into development of P66 market view.
  • Communicating external study results and market views to assist traders with successful implementation of trading tactics.
  • Understanding and communicating geopolitical and regulatory events/factors which impact price movements.
  • Leading information gathering process and development of presentation packages as needed.
  • Sharing knowledge freely and improving peer group understanding of own niche markets.
  • Leading ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade ideas.

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • 2 or more years of commercial trading, analytics, or related experience in the energy industry
  • 2 or more years of experience in the natural gas commodity market

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, or economics
  • 4 or more years of front office (trading, strategy, fundamentals) or related experience in the energy industry
  • Ability to code in Visual Basic
  • Proficient in SQL, Tableau, Python, and/or R
  • Experience in Machine Learning
  • An understanding of broader commodity markets (Crude, Gasoline, Distillates, NGLs, Power)
  • Refining/petrochemical value chain knowledge
  • High degree of collaborative skills to actively participate on cross functional teams
  • Excellent communication, inter-personal and presentation skills
  • Proficiency with statistical modeling software, database software, and economic model development
  • High degree of ethics, personal drive and dedication to achieve team goals and general interest objectives
