Job Description

As a Senior Data Scientist on the Pricing and Promotions team with Target you’ll develop models and algorithms for our retail business. You’ll work closely with partner teams to continuously learn more about our business and particularly develop an understanding of the various processes we have in play. You will partner with ML Engineers and Applied Scientists on our partner teams to build solutions for business needs including development, deployment, and maintenance of algorithms and models at scale! 

Our team oversees the creation and development of the Promotional Planning and Promotional sales Forecast, building key components which allow us to evaluate and guide promotional planning for Promotion. We aim to develop these tools to be more efficient and precise – while also making them directly available to our business team users, allowing us to quickly respond to our Guests’ needs in stores.

In this role at Target as a Senior Data Scientist, you’ll:

• Change the way promotions are planned at Target
• Become a domain expert in promotional data at Target
• Execute solutions to business problems using data analysis, data mining, forecasting, optimization tools, machine learning techniques, and statistics
• Write code for math/stats models to evaluate demand for all promoted items
• Partner with business users and other scientists / engineers to build a framework allowing us to develop a new platform to estimate Promotional sales forecast
• Synthesize analysis and results in compelling storylines and communicate to key stakeholders. You should have the ability to tell a story around the problem, the solution and the impact and value of implementing a solution
• Coordinate the analysis, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues in our software and the broader infrastructure
• Serve as an advocate of our data-driven culture with Product, Business, and Engineering to help them utilize insights that’ll direct their efforts towards initiatives with highest impacts

What we're looking for:

• S/Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Economics, Physics, Computer Science, or in a related Mathematical or Computational Engineering major (or equivalent research experience)
• 2+ years of experience in building machine learning models, artificial intelligence models, optimization algorithms or equivalent school experience
• 2+ years of experience with very large datasets and scaling Data Science solutions
• Proficient in one or more of Python, R, Scala or equivalent programming language 
• Understanding of data structures and algorithms
• Knowledge of linear algebra, statistics, information theory or related mathematical domains
• Understand deep learning, dynamic programming, reinforcement learning or related areas
• Ability to test and measure algorithms
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
