Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Statistics, Sociology, a related field, or equivalent practical experience

4 years of experience in an applied research setting

Experience in a programming language commonly used for data manipulation and computational statistics (such as Python, R, MATLAB, C++, Java, or Go), and with SQL

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Sociology, Statistics, or a related field

Demonstrated expertise in multivariate statistics and in the design of experiments

Proficiency in programming computational and statistical algorithms for large datasets

Ability to develop research questions within a given domain, and knowledge of technical tools for the analysis of data within that field

Ability to communicate effectively with executive stakeholders

Effective relationship building, presentation, and persuasion skills

Trust & Safety team members are tasked with identifying and taking on the biggest problems that challenge the safety and integrity of our products. They use technical know-how, excellent problem-solving skills, user insights, and proactive communication to protect users and our partners from abuse across Google products like Search, Maps, Gmail, and Google Ads. On this team, you're a big-picture thinker and strategic team-player with a passion for doing what’s right. You work globally and cross-functionally with Google engineers and product managers to identify and fight abuse and fraud cases at Google speed - with urgency. And you take pride in knowing that every day you are working hard to promote trust in Google and ensuring the highest levels of user safety.

When it comes to understanding and promoting user trust, the Research team is the ambassador for users outside of Google; we observe and investigate to deliver actionable insights and foundational knowledge that enable decision making on trust. Research is part of the Solutions organization in Trust and Safety, offering specialized skills, scale, and a unique cross-product perspective to amplify our efforts towards building a safer internet for everyone.

You will partner with Product Managers, Engineers, Policy Development, Enforcement specialists, and Googlers across the company to ensure that the voices of Google users are heard and that our policies ensure positive, useful, engaging user experiences on our products and platforms. We do this by leveraging empirical research methods from computer science, quantitative social science, statistics, econometrics, data science, and other fields to understand user behavior and extract meaningful patterns from large datasets.

We partner with teams across Google to deliver bold solutions in abuse areas such as malware, spam and account hijacking. A diverse team of Analysts, Policy Specialists, Engineers, and Program Managers, we work to reduce risk and fight abuse across all of Google’s products, protecting our users, advertisers, and publishers across the globe in over 40 languages.

Responsibilities

Design and execute user research studies, from large-scale international surveys to small focus groups

Understand and incorporate complex policy and business requirements into research

Advocate for research findings to diverse audiences through compelling written reports and verbal presentations

Ability to review or be exposed to sensitive content as part of our research projects

Represent Trust and Safety Research and our work in Google-wide research community
