Incumbent will be responsible for providing support and training to clinical research Principal Investigators (faculty) and their research teams (including students) in the broad areas of biomedical informatics and research data analytics to ensure success of research projects. Support and training includes, but is not limited to, designing and evaluating informatics methods and products with reporting of findings that can be generalized to the broad research community; developing custom ad hoc reports and tools in support of research data management requirements; troubleshooting of issues across projects, identifying the underlying root causes and improving processes for efficiency; and providing informatics and analytics expertise in the preparation of research protocols, abstracts, presentations, manuscripts and grant applications. He/she also will collaborate with the Information Systems and EPIC leadership to identify and implement network, database, and hardware/software needs for specific research projects or research in general; to identify, optimize and implement EPIC tools for clinical research, in particular for patient recruitment to clinical research trials; and to represent the Research Department on institutional committees responsible for data analytics, data governance and data security. Incumbent will need excellent interpersonal skills to interact with researchers, clinicians and other stakeholders in a variety of fields, and must have a broad-based knowledge of biomedical informatics practices including medical computing, medical and analytics terminology, and healthcare processes.

Education

  • Required – Masters of Science in biomedical informatics or computer science from an accredited school
  • Preferred – PhD in above fields or MD/DO with informatics experience
  • Work Experience
  • Required – At least 3 years of relevant professional level experience and/or post-doctoral training in biomedical informatics
  • Experience with large?scale data mining and data analysis; experience with text mining; Experience with relational databases.
  • Preferred – Track record of independent research and publication on relevant topics
  • Certifications : Required- None
  • Preferred- Nationally Recognized Informatics Certification or membership to national society

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • A solid understanding of medical informatics and electronic medical record systems and a very strong background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, computational biology or systems biology.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Perl, Python, Java), experience with databases (e.g. MySQL, MSSS, Oracle, DB2, RedCap), statistical analysis (e.g. using R, SPSS, or SAS), network visualization and analysis (e.g. GEPHI) and EPIC user interface and backend.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer, standard software applications and basic statistical skills.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Excellent oral communication skills; ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Proven high level technical writing skills including content and grammar.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills; ability to handle diverse responsibilities and multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to plan and manage the utilization of various resources.
  • Self-directed with the skills to work independently under strict deadlines.
  • Ability to deal diplomatically with all staff, faculty and others.
  • May be required to travel within the State of Louisiana as well as attend national meetings at various locations in the country.

Job Duties

  • Provide informatics support on research projects, including requirements analyses, design, implementation and ongoing support for the research objectives.
  • Work closely with IS and EPIC teams for network, database, and hardware/software needs for specific research projects or research in general; identify, optimize and implement EPIC tools for clinical research, in particular for patient recruitment to trials.
  • Educate internal and external partners on the value, role and methodology provided by informatics in the conduct of biomedical research.
  • Support and contribute to the administrative processes related to data analytics and informatics, including identification and implementation of emerging technologies, for the overall department.
  • Design and perform formal evaluation of informatics methods and products and report findings that can be generalized to the broader research community; present at conferences and/or publish in peer reviewed journals.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
