Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join the Storylines team. In this role, you will build new features to connect our users in innovative ways with our products -on some of our major destinations such as homepage and articles.

About the Team:

The New York Times is looking for a senior engineering manager to join our Storylines team on its Engagement Mission. The Storylines team partners with journalists and editors in the newsroom to elevate our major news formats, build products that guide readers through the news and our report, and develop tools that power our coverage of the major news of the day.

You will be at the center of our core mission — to help our readers understand what's going on in the world news, empowering our newsroom to cover the biggest stories of the day accurately, dynamically and visually. It requires collaboration across departments (product, newsroom, design, data), which is both fun and invigorating but also challenging. You will report to the Director of Engineering for the Features Group, and work with Editorial, Design, Product, and Data to provide experiences that delight and inform our readers. You will manage one Manager directly.

The Team:

  • Launches prototypes quickly to run experiments, and scales systems over time.
  • Works at the speed of the news, shipping work on cycles often measured in hours, rather than days or weeks, to respond to breaking news needs.
  • Builds tools both for our users and for internal customers (i.e., editors), and needs to think about a holistic system that connects them.
  • Thinks strategically about how to use technology to respond to news more efficiently.
  • Ensures overall application architecture suitably fits the business problem and quality standards, for now, and for the future.
  • Builds systems in technologies such as: GCP, Kubernetes, noSQL, nodejs, expressjs, graphql, React, SASS and more.

What you’ll do:

  • Be a strategic partner with product owners, project managers, designers, and data analysts to prioritize and plan work efforts and remove obstacles.
  • Set technical strategy and collaborate with our platform teams to increase the capabilities and efficiency of our systems to meet the speed of the news.
  • Manage one engineering workstream with ~6-8 direct reports, and ~9-14 total reports.
  • Manage a mid-level Engineering Manager.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and tech leads.
  • Create growth opportunities for engineers and continue nurturing their development.
  • Rapidly familiarize yourself with tech systems so that you can participate in technical discussions about teamwork.
  • Coordinate with other technology teams to craft the right solutions, manage expectations, and keep strategies aligned.
  • Clearly define and carry out engineering norms that are customized for the team.
  • Recruit for and retain extraordinary engineering talent.
  • Create an exceptional, inclusive team culture.

About You:

  • Build strong organizational cultures focused on growth, innovation, and fostering creativity.
  • Passionate about creating inclusive environments and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Capable of managing a team with complex stakeholders or engineering challenges.
  • Experience working with JavaScript or other relevant Front-end technologies.
  • Capable of having difficult conversations when necessary
  • Understand the full software development life cycle as well as Agile team processes.
  • Experience either working in/with a newsroom or with a similarly nimble, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with growing, and retaining, exceptional and diverse teams.
  • Strong track record with typically 3+ years as a manager.
  • Excel at creating high-performing teams.

This role requires managing team members who could be on-call.This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
